Gomibo Conference

Cases & Workshops

Commercial / Strategic case

The telecommunication market has been shrinking for some years now. To continue growing, Belsimpel has decided to walk two different roads.. Expanding the reseller-business into Europe as Gomibo, as well as bringing our own software to the market as a SaaS-platform for other telecommunication companies. This helped us to keep growing the last couple of years.

Now, we find ourselves in an interesting situation. Gomibo is now directly competing with a brand new company in Germany. This other company is using our software platform which means we also benefit by them generating more traffic and sales. However, this might mean that Gomibo will not grow as much as we would like to. In this case it is up to you to tackle this situation: what is the strategy that you would pick and what company would you focus on?

Technical case

Over the past few years, we have transformed the Belsimpel webstore into a full-fledged e-commerce platform. By productizing our software, we are able to support other telecom companies in setting up and/or improving their online customer journeys.

The transition from webstore to e-commerce platform did not go without a fight – we had to make key architectural changes to prepare our platform for this next step. In short, we transitioned from a monolithic to a service-oriented architecture, which effectively means that we’re splitting up key functions of our software (until then, a single codebase stored in a single repository) into separate, independent services.

We are now well on our way to realize this service-oriented architecture, as more and more services are going live. The biggest challenge that we still face, is how we are going to make our webstore pages configurable. Currently, this is still mostly hardcoded, meaning that our engineers directly control the look and feel of all pages. Whereas we want to go towards a situation where (business) users of the platform can configure the platform based on a predefined set of configurability options that we make available for them. Examples include: choosing the brand color, whether or not to show add-to-cart buttons in the offer list items, and whether or not to show recently viewed products at the bottom of a page.

It will be your task to come up with a technical solution to this problem.
